Our Approach
|
At Gaelscoil an Choillín we recognise and value the importance of a bilingual approach to teaching and learning.
Firstly, we implement the Séideán Sí Programme. This is a fun, interactive, progressive and comprehensive language programme for the development of the páiste's (child's) oral, reading and writing skills in Gaeilge. At Infant level, we encourage and praise the páistí for each and every effort they make to use their new words and phrases. At Middle and Senior level we introduce them to a variety of texts as well as aural and oral activities in the key dialects.
The CurriculumWithin the English curriculum we use a variety of resources and methodologies and implement the very successful Sails Reading Programme, The Jolly Phonics Programme and the Hands On Phonics Programme. We work hard to ensure that reading is both for enjoyment and for learning with a mixture of fictional and non-fictional readers available to the páistí. We begin using class novels in Rang a hAon (1st Class) and we strive to choose novels that are both fun and informative at the same time and from which the Múinteoir can design class-based activities and projects. Rang a Trí (3rd Class) have an extra school tour at the end of the year which is based upon the novel that they read in 3rd Class and in preparation for the novel that they will begin to read in 4th Class. These class novels have been carefully and thoughtfully chosen by the staff and the tour has been designed around the cultural, historical and geographical elements of both novels.
We take a bilingual approach to the teaching and learning of mathematical concepts and we use a variety of texts and resources in both languages - Mata Beo, Mata Draíochta, Mata Meabhrach and Figure It Out. We place additional emphasis on mental maths and problem-solving as key mathematical skills that are an important element within simple everyday tasks. |
